Seismic data is acquired in time - the time taken for the sound to travel from the source to reflectors and to return to receivers. However, wells are drilled in depth, not time. Variations in velocity can distort the depth, size, and shape of possible reservoirs. Therefore, conversion from time to depth is needed for a clear picture of the prospect and the risks involved.
A decision to drill an exploration well with the objective to find a new oil or gas field must be based on a sound assessment of the prospect's risks and of the volumes: what is the chance that a well will find hydrocarbons, and how much could it be? Risk and volume assessments form the basis for decisions to drill a well or not, and as such form the link between subsurface evaluation and the business aspects of the petroleum industry.
The main objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of reservoir gemechanics which become nowadays very important. This course is focused on fundamentals of geomechanics and rock physics required for key practical applications: pore pressure and formation stress prediction, determination of optimally-stable wellbore trajectories, production-induced faulting and subsidence, effects of fluid injection or/and depletion on fault reactivation and reservoir compaction, hydraulic fracturing stimulation and sand production prediction
This course examines the processes leading to the formation and accumulation of carbonate & Siliciclastic rocks and how sequence stratigraphy provides a predictive method to understand the formation of these reservoirs and application in oil and gas industry.
